Grounding Practices for Relaxation, Better Sleep and Better Energy

The result of today’s overstimulated world, many of us are craving peace, energy, and better emotional balance. One of the most powerful—and often overlooked—tools for healing is grounding, also known as earthing. It’s a natural, gentle practice that helps you reconnect to the Earth’s energy and bring your body back into balance and renew energy.

What Is Grounding

Grounding is the practice of making direct contact with the Earth’s surface—walking barefoot on grass or soil, lying on the ground, or immersing yourself in natural surroundings. The Earth’s surface carries a natural negative charge, which helps neutralize excess positive charges in the body. As a result, this exchange is believed to promote better physical and emotional health by reducing inflammation, easing pain, and calming the nervous system.

My Personal Grounding Favorite Practices

Some of the grounding practices I love most are walking barefood in soft grass, exploring a creek bed walking along the smooth rocks in the water, and wandering through a forest.  Once in a while I get to the ocean and I love strolling along the beach in the sand and waves.  But my absolute favorite? Spreading out a blanket directly on the earth and taking a nap in the sun.  Without a doubt, it’s some of the best sleep I ever get – deep, peaceful, and completely restorative.  And above all, be sure to practice safe sun exposure.

When I feel anxious or mentally overwhelmed, I go outside and dig in the dirt.  I pull weeds or plant something new.  Gardening connects me immediately with the Earth and all of a sudden I feel grounded, focused, and calm.  Remembering to do this will revitalize your energy.

How to Practice Grounding

Grounding doesn’t have to be complicated or take a lot of time.  You can ground your body in everyday ways such as:

  • Walk barefoot in the grass, dirt, or sand
  • Sit or lie on the ground outdoors
  • Garden
  • Wade through a creek or spend time by a lake
  • Lay a blanket directly on the Earth and rest in the sunshine
  • Take a walk through a forest or nature
  • Additionally, there are tools like essential oils to support you

It doesn’t involve exercise—it’s simply about being present in nature. The sights, sounds, and smells of the forest support your emotional well-being, lower blood pressure, and as a result you will feel more connected and peaceful.
